Triogue Way, Portlaoise Playful Active Travel Route

A Playful City partnered with Laois County Council to promote active travel along the Triogue Way in Portlaoise, encouraging walking and cycling for school journeys through a research-driven, community-led approach.

By leading inclusive workshops, surveys, and site visits, the project identified barriers such as safety concerns, lack of engaging routes and limited crossings. Together with young people, parents and local stakeholders, A Playful City co-designed playful and practical interventions—like Park ‘n’ Stride and Gateway to Play—that aim to create a safer, more engaging and sustainable travel environment to support long-term behaviour change.

The outcome of this collaborative process is a detailed design brief providing evidence-based recommendations for permanent improvements along the route. These targeted solutions enhance safety, accessibility, and the overall public realm, making active travel a more appealing and enjoyable choice. The project offers a scalable model for integrating play and placemaking into everyday urban mobility, involving schools, community groups, and local authorities to ensure lasting impact and stronger connections within Portlaoise town.

The "Southern Circular Road Design Guide - Portlaoise Active Travel 2024," created by A Playful City, provides design guidelines for an active travel route on the Southern Circular Road in Portlaoise. The project aims to connect the school campus to the Triogue Way, creating an engaging and functional space for children.
